This concrete structure housed on of the generators (or was it pumps?)
IMG_1605
Down the wall a bit more is another valve that mirrors the one from a few photos back. Behind me is another one of those big U pipe assemblies. Right in the foreground is a pump of some sort. There's two wheels right on the left-hand side. Let's take a look...
IMG_1606
Interesting. These could be flywheels of some sort or perhaps there was some belt driven equipment down here at one point.
IMG_1607
This lends some support to those wheels being for belts, but who can say? This is either a small generator or a motor. Perhaps for the elevator that used to be here?
IMG_1608
Here's the other U-shaped pipe assembly.
IMG_1609
At the far end of the complex (two floors above is the beauty salon/store) is a bathroom/sauna sort of area. We're going to go ahead a bit and turn to the right.
IMG_1610
All the rain and mud has caused a bit of a mess on the floor. I have to wonder about the operation of the various valves that are everywhere.
IMG_1611
Here's an unfinished sauna.
IMG_1612
Looking up to the 1st floor and beyond. This view is going to remain open for the tenants of the complex.
IMG_1613
At the bottom left is the sauna. Through the exceptionally cool arch are washrooms. We now move to the far right wall to a doorway...
IMG_1615
I stick my head through the doorway and take a shot. Not much going on in here at the moment.
IMG_1616
A random shot looking upwards.
IMG_1617
On the way out of the basement I take this shot of yet another valve in the middle of standing water.
IMG_1618
First floor.
IMG_1619
The brick to the right of the grey vertical line is original. The brick to the left of it is new.
IMG_1620
Going back down to the first floor.
IMG_1621
We go outside and swing around the building to the elevator.
IMG_1622
Waiting for the elevator.
IMG_1623
Going up and looking down.
IMG_1624
Top floor looking out at the gorgeous Comal river.
IMG_1625
More Comal river and in the upper right is where the New Braunfels Wurstfest is held.
IMG_1626
Peeking through a window at the Comal river.
IMG_1627
All of the outside shots were done from here, the top floor. The cement blocks were originally used to support the various coal-crushing machinery. Oddly, this machinery was used for only a very short time before being removed. If you look carefully, you can make out some stairs in the center. These stairs lead up to the roof. Ahead, on the ceiling above the circular opening is a newly installed skylight.
IMG_1628
Mechanical assembly used to open and close the window.
IMG_1629
The skylight is in the middle.
IMG_1630
A blurry photo of of what it's like looking down from the eight floor into the middle of the complex.
IMG_1631
A blurry shot of the eyebrow window at the front of the building. Remember the star that I pointed out? This is way up, above that star.
IMG_1632
Ahead the floor has yet to be poured.
IMG_1633
One floor down. A lot of these beams are going to be made head-friendly to make room for apartments.
IMG_1634
Caution! I cannot stress what a strong role saftey plays here. These are professionals through and through.
